About Us

Sandbox's Story

Sandbox was born in June 2021, when a group of CU Theatre & Dance Students wanted to create a space to explore new ideas! In fall 2021, the first season of Sandbox began, led by four senior BFA Acting students. Since then, Sandbox has continued to produce wildly successful seasons of productions, drawing in students from in and out of the theatre department. Though young, Sandbox is looking forward to continuing to grow in years to come!

Our Mission

A Platform for Performance Art

This idea came to be due to the vast amount of art students wanted to create, collaborate on, and experiment with. The artists of Sandbox are all young professionals in the midst of finding their creative voices. Sandbox offers artists of all disciplines, whether you’re an actor, designer, director, or manager, a safe space to play with big, experimental, and creative ideas. Our mission at Sandbox is to apply what we have learned as artists both in school and in the real world to our creative works and make something truly unique out of it. We invite all people of all identities to come and create with us. Now let’s play!

Our Principles

Creativity

Creativity is at the center of all we do. Through performance and practice, process and research, we chase innovation. Especially highlighting revisionist revivals of shows, completely original works, or devised pieces proposed by students to invest in the role of creativity within a liberal arts education for cultivating a community of collaborators, thinkers, and makers. This does not exclude shows that require rights but we encourage everyone to think outside the box!

Research

We teach, create, and share performance and scholarship that is grounded in histories and forward-looking. We provide students with the tools and space to become the next generations of citizens, professionals, and leaders in and through theater, dance, and performance studies.

Diversity

We are committed to recognizing, learning, and teaching a multiplicity of ways of knowing how racial injustice exists in predominantly white spaces, and making diversity and inclusion of all races, gender identity, sexuality, and differently-abled bodies to be celebrated and heard in a safe creative environment. We work to dismantle structural inequality and build more inclusive, accessible, and equitable ways to create by holding discussions of the subject matter in our town halls, and accommodating and pushing works by such individuals. We encourage and look forward to project proposals that highlight diversity and inclusion that is not always seen in the larger department shows.

Let's Play!
